Start with the travel logistics: there is no bridge to the island, most visitors arrive by ferry, and cars generally stay on the mainland.

Most visitors arrive by ferry
Passenger ferry service operates from both Mackinaw City, south of the Mackinac Bridge, and St. Ignace, north of the bridge. During the primary tourist season, ferries run frequently—often about every 30 minutes—though exact schedules change by date and operator.
Drive to Mackinaw City or St. Ignace.
Use the ferry operator’s parking area and follow current luggage instructions.
Take the passenger ferry.
Current official visitor information lists Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry and Arnold Transit Company for mainland service.
Arrive car-free.
Walk, bike, use a horse-drawn taxi, or coordinate luggage service with your lodging property.
You can also fly to Mackinac Island Airport. Air-taxi flights from St. Ignace can take about seven minutes, and charter service is available from several Michigan airports.
